Radio Show

CB radios emerged in the 70s as a popular method of communication on highways of America. While not as mainstream as they once were, radio CB are still widely used by owners of trucks, jeeps, RVs, cars and motorcycles.

There are a number of alternatives to CB radios that include two-way radios, GMRS radios, ham radios and business band radios. In order to choose a solution that best fits your needs, is important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each option available. CB radios, like all types of radio mentioned above, have a number of advantages and disadvantages that should be evaluated when considering a purchase:

Advantages

No License Fee: Unlike some types of radios, CB radio operators are not required to obtain a license from the FCC. This makes CB radios a very convenient option if you do not want problems with tests and licensing requirements.

Generalized Acceptance: CB radios are the most used radio from vehicle to vehicle communication on highways of America. In virtually all main roads, you will be able to hear the activity on channel 19, the channel used CB. If you would like to get traffic information, updates the condition of the road or simply start a friendly conversation, you will be able to because a CB widespread use of radio.

Cost Effective: You can buy a CB radio installation complete (including a radio, antenna and installation hardware) for well under $ 100. On a cost basis, CB radios can match if not beat, most of the radio options. Moreover, they are usually permanently installed in a vehicle, which provides the added convenience and professionalism.

Disadvantages

Restricted Range: Due to restrictions FCC, all 11 meters CB radios are limited to 4 watts of power transmission. This usually limits the effective range of a CB radio to eight miles or less, depending upon terrain and weather conditions. While CB radios are effective for short transmission distances between, that are not appropriate for someone in need of long-range communications.

Antenna Requirements: Like all CB radios transmit at the same 4 watts of power, the antenna is the main determinant of system performance. Subsequently, CB radios need to make use of large externally mounted antennas for optimal performance. As these antennas tend to run anywhere from 12 inches to over 5 meters long, they can be impractical and inconvenient for many vehicles. While short antennae and can are used, usually produce radio inadequate performance.

Link Installation: CB radios usually require a permanent installation because the antenna and performance issues, and are not a practical option when using a compact and mobile communication is necessary. Portable Radios CB are available, but tend to provide sub-standard performance unless used with a long telescopic antenna or external.

Summary

Radios BC is still a medium widely used, especially on roads of America. Although not suitable for everyone, they offer an extremely accessible and convenient to communicate to those who understand the strengths and limitations of the medium.
