Hypnosis is now mainstream. Movie stars, pop stars, and all kinds of celebrities, politicians and professional athletes use hypnosis to get over a problem or performance to improve in some areas of their lives.
You probably have articles on studies and experiments with hypnosis in various magazines or newspapers and online to read.
Perhaps you see stage hypnosis shows, or even been one of them himself.
And it is very possible that you are someone who is at knowing a point in their lives, went to a professional hypnotist for help.

Meditation states are light hypnotic trance states. NLP is one of the sub disciplines of hypnosis. They are limited by the ability of individual hypnosis, conventional on the other hand is almost unlimited or limited by the suggestions that the hypnotist can give.
