Edward de Bono, the author once said that humor is by far the most important activity of the human brain. If this is true, then "Return of the dittos" proves that the fertile brain of the author, Dale Andrew White, continues to overtime, much to the benefit of its readers.
"Return of the dittos" is a rich treat of satire and humor, all packed into twenty short stories and tied with a ribbon. There is no central theme to the stories, an element of surprise and anticipation add to everyone. Browsing through the stories, the reader will be from the account of a Bag Boy talk revolt in a rundown grocery store, a cat, cat to combat all the battles for the presidency of the club to send a woman over, the boring and mind numbing revelations of an aging, semi-retired rock star, and even a bit of revisionist history about what really happened when Christopher Columbus approached Queen Isabella on the exploration of new World. My favorite of the lot is the history of BB Motley, an aspiring young lawyer, trying desperately and unsuccessfully, from the staid, old law firm he works for the To conceal the fact that he comes from a family of circus performers.
One of the things that the stories in "Return of the dittos" as clever and humorous, does is White's agile use of names, places, and to identify people. Several stories refer to Swampwater, the county seat of Mosquito County, Florida, for example, and while reading the book, the reader meets such characters as Mr. Knuckell, a cumbersome and relevant high school directors, and Emily Hattcheck, a shy and humble member of the club of that woman. But among the divers of the character voices in the illustrated book my favorite Parker Pry, a nose fetish, which is the charm subject to a nasally challenged married lady aptly named Wendy Schnott.
I must admit that even after reading White's story several times, I've always still problems to describe his writing style. Some of his stories come as written in the classic style of humorists like Mark Twain or the British satirist Saki, while others remind me of the kind of slapstick comedy in the films of Charlie Chaplin or Laurel and Hardy presented. Still other stories are raw, in your face Humor worthy of Comedy Central. I just know that David Andrew White, a clever and talented writer, and "Return of the dittos" is a really funny book. It is the kind of book you want with you if you have some time to kill and are willing to laugh at themselves and laugh in the world.
