The Aeneid is an epic poem that was written by Virgil (70 BC - 19 BC), about Aeneas, a prince of Troy myth that survives the fall of Troy, then travel to Italy to found the great Roman Empire. Aeneas was a character of the existing Greek and Roman mythology as it was presented in the Iliad, Homer, Virgil that lent its protagonist and this nationalist epic fashion attractive.
Born Publius Vergilius Maro, Virgil is considered one of the Latin poets have lived. His writing the Aeneid was in line with its ambition lifetime to write an epic challenge to Roman Greek epics of Homer, a the greatest Greek poets. The fact that we appreciate this masterpiece, in its raw form - Virgil died before completing it, leaves no doubt as to his genius. The Aeneid was written at a time of political upheaval and social role in the Roman Empire, with the fall of the Republic after the assassination of Julius Caesar. Writing the Aeneid, Virgil's is thought to have the hope of bringing together the people, on behalf of his friend the Emperor Augustus, to continue believing in the greatness "of Rome" legitimacy of the state of the Caesars and reaffirming the mission divinely sanctioned 'Rome' to rule the world.
Legend has it that Virgil fearing he would die before it has fully reviewed and refined this epic poem, instructed his friends that the Aeneid should be burned after his death, but the Emperor Augustus decreed otherwise. Two thousand years later, the reader awestruck remains eternally grateful that you want to die of Virgil was never granted.
