In the jungle of everyday life, the time of writing is difficult to find. Best intentions flag in the heat, and rarely recover in the morning. You want to write, you have to write, but it is not happening and guilt feels like monkeys howling in his chest. Work, children, errands, friends, family, finances, time and energy you need are nowhere to be seen.
Stop looking. When you can not find time to write, you have to do it. Hack it out of the vineyard; persuade her down the trees. Elmore Leonard wrote parts of his first novel, The Bounty Hunters, inside a desk drawer the advertising agency where she worked. Plenty of writers juggle life and demanding full and still produce consistently. If you're committed, you can too. Here are six ways to make it happen:
1. Commit. If your heart and mind is not in it, making it not time will help. You going anywhere, and the monkeys just scream louder. Make a contract with yourself, and ask someone who invested in its development to arrest him responsible.
2. Prioritize. Where is the writing fit in the hierarchy of your life? You spend more time on less important things, like Facebook or clean the house? Have these things become excuses to malinger? Rank among all his records and determine how much time and energy that are required to serve you.
3. Streamline. Where are you wasting time that could be spent writing? You can fold anywhere? Rehearse your presentation as you move, or make calls at home rather than drive in the office? Search for a minute each stone, and list the ways you can become more efficient.
4. Delete. Looking for things to cut your day. If something non-essential is the poaching of their time, and is a lower priority than writing, kill him. TV, anyone? If you're zoned out on sitcoms when you could be on the keyboard, see a number above.
5. Energize. If you are not sleeping, eating right and exercising, you will not have juice to write before or after a long day. Ditch the myth that writers have to be drunk, stoned and disturbed to produce good work. Good writing and high energy come from to treat yourself well physically, mentally and emotionally.
6. Agenda. When this issue appears is to fight or flee to a lot of writers. But a smart, flexible schedule is essential for freeing up time and staying on track. Why programming is so important, I'm going to cover it exclusively on the second part of this series.
If you are prompted to write and feeling lost in the jungle, do not beat yourself. Blame a disempowering emotion, and under its influence everything becomes difficult. Give your drive to be a motivating force. Do something to suit every day, and congratulate to make progress. The time and energy you need is out there, hidden in the bush. Once you wash them out, the monkeys are calm and your writing can thrive.
