Spanish Language

Puerto Rico is a great place to study Spanish, with a potential disadvantage, which I will discuss in a moment.

San Juan, the capital and largest city of this U.S. territory of the Commonwealth, has several excellent schools of Spanish. When you're not studying, you will enjoy the rides and Old San Juan, or hit the famous beach which is full of casinos and night clubs swinging.

There is also a language school in Bayomon, another town on the north coast of the island, and it is true, not far from San Juan.

If the environment is important for you to decide where to study Spanish, Puerto Rico has everything: climate year-round big beautiful beaches, fascinating tropical forests, exciting cities, and above all, some very friendly people who are proud of their island and will do everything they can make you feel welcome. And if you are a U.S. citizen, do you need a passport to go there.

But there is a possible negative, as mentioned.

If you decide to study in Puerto Rico, you will have to be constantly on your guard not to slip to communicate in English most time. This is because a large number of Puerto Ricans are bilingual, with a handful of being able to speak English, and Spanish as they can.

Truly language learning means taking what you studied in class and use it in day-to-day with people I meet on the streets, shops, restaurants and so on. Puerto Ricans tend to be as comfortable in two languages that can be easily taken even to try your Spanish.

But if you have the willpower to avoid the trap of falling into English, you certainly should study Spanish in Puerto Rico. It will be an extremely rewarding experience.

How can I improve my understanding of the Spanish language?

One of my major in college is Spanish and I am very difficult to understand that when speaking. I is not well written, and read a little better, but when I hear (especially fast), all words seem to link together. I tried watch movies in Spanish and listen to the radio in Spanish for practice, but does not seem to help much. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a web site out there that can help me with this? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Check with the department of modern languages at the university. There are often students they need international help with English. You can sometimes English and sometimes Spanish so that they can improve. Can you afford to do an exchange program? I had the same problem until I actually went to school in Mexico and lived with a Mexican family. If you can not pay one semester of college in check language schools in Mexico (or elsewhere). Cuernavaca is known for its large language schools. It's where I lived and is a great place. If you watch movies in Spanish try to do with Spanish subtitles so you can see the words. That will help you get more accustomed to what they sound when pronounced quickly. You can do So with most DVD's. It's hard, because one hears that are similar and then run together and you are not sure what. A memory that is confused with "understand". I was in a shop (in a store) and so when my friend asked me if I understood (understand?) And I replied yes, we are in a shop lol. I'm teaching now the vocabulary of the school, the pencil. We realized that the word sounds like slate pencil. See the words as you hear them help. The best thing to do is dive. If you can not really do it out of this country, then what you can do inside our country. With a large Hispanic population that will surely be able to meet people who can practice. Good luck!
