Invasive procedure was written by Orson Scott Card & Aaron Johnston. Johnston is a writer and Orson Scott Card is the author of "Ender's Game." The prevailing view seems to be that it is an abomination. I was surprised, but still so many abysmal ratings on the Internet, I decided to read it anyway. Perhaps readers were expecting something else, such as card Bestsellers series. Since I never read "Ender's Game" I did not start this book with a preconceived expectations, and I thought it was a decent if not great read.
It is a futuristic medical geneticist, Galen, George, vanishes in disgrace after he shunned by his colleagues. He invented a way to alter human DNA. His virus can cure disease, but it also makes the More people - and is compatible with His will. Galen is crazy and thinks he is the Messiah immortal. His followers are called "healer" and feed them and treat the homeless. These people do not know that he plans to use them as a host for its own organs, he will live forever.
Working the federal government, a virologist Lieutenant Colonel Frank Hartmann and his team are trying to find Galen and create an antidote. They discover the hideout, an abandoned nursing home, the equipped with a lab and she was trying to those who had been given to the virus and a doctor in treatment she compelled to save Galen, because her son was kidnapped. The action is condensed and there are some action scenes with bats Galen and a bit of romance thrown in.
Many readers have unhappy than the plot boring, predictable and far fetched, with flat, generic characters. Yes, it is a short characterization. The characters are caricatures, and some stupid stuff to keep the story rolling. But the condition, provocative and timely ethical dilemmas offer some food for thought. Otherwise it is easy to read, fun and fast paced. Ideal for a To read the beach or the time for a flight. What is implausible, it's good sci-fi. Take it as an amusing diversion, and you will not be disappointed.
Despite the shortcomings, I was entertained. But when medical thrillers are your thing and you are looking for something more exciting check out Michael Crichton, Robin Cook, Peter Clement and Bill Clement.
