When Dan Brown published his book, "The DaVinci Code", the Christians were at war. After all, Brown had effectively rewritten two thousand years of Christian history with the assertion that Jesus Christ was married.
If you choose to believe or not is really irrelevant to this article. Personally as a Christian, I saw nothing to get all in arms about.
In fact, Brown's strategy was brilliant. Who knows if he really believes in he said? The bottom line is the bottom line.
As a marketer, I found it easier to see through the plot of Brown. By creating controversy on its book, he sold 46,000,000 + copies of "The DaVinci Code". Now he is laughing all the way to the bank.
Writing about controversial issues not is nothing new. Using controversy to promote their products and services is also nothing new.
Brown has chosen to write about what had been done before. A good example is a book written by Robert Ludlum.
In 1976, Robert Ludlum published The Gemini Contenders. " Ludlum offered an alternative Gospel written by one of the Disciples of Jesus. Recovered by the Nazis, this gospel alternative could destroy the world of the Allies and the Nazis to take the victory.
Ludlum What is not yet done is to rewrite history. He used real events as narrated in the traditional history books.
Ludlum also did not set out to offend anyone. He was telling a story, pure and simple.
So What does this have to do with the controversy?
Plenty. It can mean the difference between a successful product, and a super blockbuster product. It can mean thousands or even millions of dollars difference in sales.
Recently, a lot products were launched on the Internet that the controversy serves as the primary point of sale. The problem is, many of these products do not live up to the hype.
The real secret is the current controversy. You also want to live up to the hype, you will create to launch their product.
The question is, how you do it?
First, do your homework. Regardless of what industry you're in, you can do a little research the table of contents, reviews and any other information you can find.
Next, do a search on a news site in Google, Yahoo or MSN. Put your search terms in quotes to make your search more effective. Find out what's being written on the subject.
You can also search news sites such as PR Web release The advantage of seeking a PR portal is that you can see what other companies are saying about themselves. Press are meant to be informative news pieces on a business, but these pieces of news are still written from the perspective of a particular business.
Create controversy, you need an alternative viewpoint.
Here's an example:
With Dan Brown's book, he chose for going against 2000 years of what had been considered conventional wisdom by Christians. He offered a different historical point of view of history, and he chose to base its history on this point of view.
It worked. Their sales prove it.
The controversial issue is often not the most popular view of time, but that does not mean that the view is wrong, or less, why is not the point of view the most popular.
King Solomon once said: "No is nothing new under the sun. "I think that is true. There is no real secrets, only principles that work.
Creating controversy is a view that works.
Creating controversy is an eternal principle you can use to sell their products and services. Just make sure your product lives up to the hype that you create. You will sell more products that way.
