Radio Shows

Apart from being fascinated by the great old radio shows when I was a kid, I was also fascinated with puppets and ventriloquism.

I remember See my first Edgar Bergen on television as a guest on various shows - I could not tell you what, but I know his guest appearances have been relatively frequent.

And then I remember him as the original host on "Do You Trust Your Wife? Later Who Do You Trust? If the titles also altered and changed hosts a very young and unknown and replaced Johnny Carson acquired Charlie McCarthy Ed Witha McMahon.

As a child I did not think Bergen was all that great ventriloquist, because I could not move his mouth when he spoke of his dummies. That was when I was young and did not get to see how this guy really Talented was. see

He was a great ventriloquist on radio, which was by the way, fairly groundbreaking in the 1930s, when Bergen's old radio show was a huge success. Think about it - put a ventriloquist on the radio?

Over the years, I have a whole new appreciation for the genius of Edgar Bergen's.

He was not a children's act. His routines were not for a child's birthday party or a Saturday morning Show developed. His bits were smart and clever, cheeky, and sometimes even a little bit ...

He had great chemistry with his Bergen characters. seemed a mild, almost timid father figure Charlie's witty, sarcastic, rebellious "son." You would exchange fire on you over, such as lasers with mountains going into and out of Charlie's voice to an astonishing clip.

It is no wonder that many thought at the time of the radio audience Charlie was a real boy.

Mortimer Snerd And who can forget? What a great alter ego Charlie.

Mortimer was gracious and funny and totally innocent. He knew he was stupid, but because he was stupid, he did not know care. In contrast to the sarcastic Charlie, he never said an unkind word to say.

When I was a child Mortimer was my favorite because he is more of a cartoon character.

I still love to listen to the Mountains McCarthy and old radio shows, especially when they show how the second segment is introduced, comes a Mortimer's theme music on. The audience broke into applause and You can hear them laughing, as (of course) Mortimer has led to the stage.

Bergen made a splash on the radio after the performance on the Rudy Vallee Show in the early 30s. occur Edgar had his own show for many years thereafter, and it was for the stars of the time want to be in fashion in the show and trade Charlie. with barbs

Perhaps the most famous opponent Charlie WC Fields, Charlie called the son of a gate-leg table and after some thought ofa one woodpecker.

Another famous (or notorious) bit on The Edgar Bergen Show appearance bya involved in 1939. West Mae West played Eve in the Garden of Eden --- but they played our original mother, the famous Mae West spin and the look she was banned from radio and almost cost his job Bergen with Chase and Sanborn, his long-time sponsors.
